Star Of Bengal, Duke Street
If you're strolling down Duke Street in Darlington and the aroma of spices pulls you in, you’re probably getting close to Star Of Bengal, Duke Street-a local favorite that brings bold Bangladeshi and Indian flavors to the heart of the UK. Located at 24 Duke St, Darlington DL3 7AQ, this gem is far more than just another curry house; it’s a place where flavor meets comfort, and spice meets sophistication.
From the moment you walk in, there's a welcoming vibe. The interior strikes a balance between cozy and modern-perfect for a casual solo dinner or a lively night out with friends. It’s worth noting that the restaurant is wheelchair accessible, making it inclusive for everyone. Whether you’re dining in, ordering a quick takeaway, or getting your favorite curry delivered straight to your door, Star Of Bengal nails the convenience factor.
First things first-the menu. If you’re into classics with a kick, the Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi is a solid choice. Tender chicken pieces cooked in a fiery sauce with green peppers and onions-simple, spicy, satisfying. For something creamy and crowd-pleasing, the Chicken Tikka Masala is the go-to, offering that rich tomato-based sauce with a subtle smoky depth.
Vegetarians aren’t left behind. The Mushroom Bhaji is a standout with its earthy flavor and perfect texture, while the Onion Bhaji delivers that golden, crispy crunch you’d expect from a top-tier Indian starter. Vegan options are available too, making this place a solid pick if you’re searching for plant-based Indian cuisine in Darlington.
Craving something indulgent? Pair your curry with Garlic Nan, Keema Naam, or Onion Rice for that extra flavor boost. And don’t sleep on the Meat Samosas-they're crispy on the outside, packed with savory filling on the inside.
Interestingly, the menu even surprises with an unexpected twist like Clam Chowder, giving a nod to fusion flair. It’s not your average curry house, and that’s part of the charm.
Now let’s talk pairings. Cobra Beer is a popular choice to balance out the heat. But if you’re not into lagers, the restaurant also boasts a solid wine list, spirits, and even coffee and tea options. The tea selection is worth exploring, especially if you're winding down after a spicy meal. And yes-they’ve got desserts, and good ones. Whether it’s a creamy kulfi or something more traditional, their dessert game is strong.
Star Of Bengal is popular for dinner crowds and perfect if you're dining solo. The relaxed ambiance, fast service, and halal-friendly menu make it accessible to a wide range of diners. Late-night cravings? They’ve got you. The restaurant serves late-night food, which is a lifesaver if you’re finishing work late or out and about in Darlington.
Whether you’re a local foodie, a visitor looking for authentic Indian restaurants in Darlington, or someone who just really loves a good Chicken Tikka Bengal, this spot should be on your radar. The service is friendly, portions are generous, and the flavors are consistently on point.
You also won’t have to worry about long waits or missed orders-they offer no-contact delivery, which is fast and reliable, especially through food delivery apps. Plus, takeaway orders are packed thoughtfully, so your naan doesn’t go soggy and your curry stays warm. Small touches like that make a big difference.

My family have been coming to this Indian for years and they make the best food and have really nice staff and good service I would recommend to anyone
Saturday visit... The staff were so friendly, professional, and attentive. The food was delicious. Poppadoms with the best condiments pickle tray to get the tadtebuds going pre starters. Both starters were exactly what we were hoping for: taste, quality, and cooked perfectly. (Onion bhajis and Meat samosas). Our mains were exceptional. The flavours were amazing, again perfectly cooked and a really good portion size. We had a fantastic meal. 5* service and 5* food. We're definitely returning.
Had the two for £45 deal. Food was delicious! Really nice and hot and generous portions. Couldn't finish all of it!
I enjoyed this takeawa - mostly. The onion bhajis are phenomenal! They’re impressively large, wonderfully chunky, crispy on the outside, lush on the inside and deliver a beautifully balanced flavour. Unlike many others, they're not overly greasy, and the spices and texture truly shine. Each bite is a testament to how a proper bhaji should taste – utterly delicious. The mint sauce is equally delightful – fresh, creamy, and minty, complementing the starters perfectly. A let down was the chops. While the marinades on the chops were exceptional – rich, authentic, and packed with depth – the execution fell short. Sadly, they were overcooked, leaving them tough and slightly chewy, which was a shame. The popadoms were perfectly crisp, and the garlic chilli chicken bursts with flavour, with just the right level of heat, and it was well cooked, so the chicken wasn't overly dry. The peshwari naan was another highlight, beautifully sweet with a lovely, soft texture. Reasonable prices. I would try them again, but wouldn't reorder the chops.
The food was fantastic and the services was friendly with a smile. Our portions were massive and all the food was piping hot and fresh. We will be back in the future to try more dishes
